I went from running fast-growth companies with committed teams to becoming a passive investor with no employees—a huge mental shift, but one I was prepared for. My intent was to transact on my terms and I never wanted to feel regret or failure after selling, which is something I’ve seen happen to too many business owners. Before launching The Exit Syndicate, while coaching other business owners, I realized most weren’t ready to go to market. Either the business was ready but the ownership wasn’t, or the ownership wanted to sell but the business wasn’t positioned correctly.
I also saw a major issue: too many owners were getting bad advice (literally paying for it) from so-called “exit experts” who had never actually sold a business themselves. Worse yet, some advisors had misaligned interests, caring more about making money from the transaction than helping the owner make the right decision.
